The Lyabi Hauz Ensemble
There is a popular place in each city. In Bukhara, tourists like visiting "the pool" at the Lyabi Hauzensemble.
Lyabi Hauzis one of the largest water-pools in the Middle East that was made in an artificial way.
It was dug out in 1620 between the Madrasah and the Tekke Nadir Devon Begi. With the combination of tekke and madrasah, the ensemble became not only a wonderful architectural memorial, but also a kind of pleasant locality for vacation.
The first construction of Lyabi Hauz (1620) was a big rectangular building with a cruciform hall. A blue dome crowns the top of the building, and there are Hudjurs in the corners.
The facade of Nadir Devon Begi Madrasah was painted with deer and fairytale birds. Now, tourists can enjoy concerts and exhibitions of masters from all around the city.
Kukaldash Lyabi Hauz's second construction was the Madrasah. Its second name is Kulba-Kukaldash. The Madrasah was built in the 16th century and is one of the most imposing Madrasahs in the city.
Madrasah Kukaldash consists of 160 student rooms and has several levels. By the way, the outstanding writer of Middle-Asia, Sadriddin Ayni, also studied here.
The facade of the Kukaldash Madrasah was decorated with majolica, while the interior was composed of starred plafonds cast from ganj and laid out with bricks.
It is rather narrow and has many different corners and stairs, making it easy to get lost.
Lyabi Hauz was covered with stone steps. It has a width of 36 meters and a length of 42 meters; it was used for festivals in ancient times. Some of the retail shops were decorated with carpets, and when the sun went down, there were lights everywhere. Artists, artisans, and tea makers gathered around the pool.
