Kalon Mosque

Miri Arab Madrasah and Minaret with Kalon mosque comprise the architectural complex Poi Kalon in Bukhara.

During the reign of the Sheybanids in 1514, the mosque was built. It is the second-biggest mosque after Bibi Khanum in Samarkand and can accommodate 12 thousand prayers.
The mosque was constructed in compliance with all existing traditions of architecture at that time: right-angled plan and four aivans in the courtyard. The perimeter of the courtyard was covered with a gallery of 288 domes and 208 pillars.

The long axis of the courtyard is completed with maksura. Maksura: front part with a dome in the building in the form of an X-shaped hall.

The eastern entrance has mosaic portals and two blue domes on both sides.

A large dome in a mosaic drum crowns the hall. Two other blue domes mark the location of the worship niche.

By the way, specially engraved writing bearing the name of the main architect of the mosque, Bayazid Al Purani, was also preserved until our days.

At the inner entrance to the mosque is the burial of the first imam (1915).
