Architectural Ensemble of the Kosh-Madrasah
The well-known architectural ensemble – Kosh-Madrasah – was built at a time when Sheybanid Abdulla-Khan reigned over Bukhara.
"Kosh stands for "twin". Ensemble Kosh-Madrasah was built in the second half of the 16th century and consists of two madrasahs: Madrasah Modari-khan (1566) and Madrasah Abdulla Khan (1588–1590).
The building of Madrasah Modari Khan was finished in 1566. However, its construction looks rather modest and does not catch one’s eyes.
Modari khan Madrasah consists of some palaces. The facade of the madrasah is in inclined form. The main entrance to the Madrasah is decorated with high peshtaks and composed of geometric ornaments and flower-turrets. Two-storyied balconies on both sides have decorations with ceramic panels in the form of flowers and buds.
Abdulla Khan Madrasah was built in 1588–1590. The architectural monument was placed up four centuries later, after the first construction, and with the portal, it is addressed to Modari Khan Madrasah.
By construction, Madrasah Abdulla Khan is almost similar to Modari Khan. The only difference between the two madrasahs is that the second building is much bigger than the first one.
