The observatory and memorial museum of Ulugbek

In the ancient city of Samarkand, by the orders of the governor, Ulugbek, was built an observatory on the Kuhak hill.

Well-known masters worked under the structure.

Among them were Alauddin Ali ibn Muhammad, Ali Kushchi, Giyaseddin al-Kashi, Salahuddin Musa ibn Muhammad Kazy-zade-Rumi and many others. They developed projects and plans, as well as improved many astronomical instruments.
Scientists and astronomers worked for a long time at the observatory and were able to create a catalog, which was named "Zij Gurgoni" or "Zij Ulugbek." The catalog includes the coordinates of 1018 celestial bodies. Despite the fact that the catalog was finished in 1437, Ulugbek continued to create his own new star coordinates until his death.

After the death of the ruler, the observatory worked for 20 years. Then, while revolts, rallies, and murder occurred, the building emptied. Having stood ruined for decades in the 16th century, it was dismantled brick by brick. In the 20th century, scientists found remaining traces of the famous buildings. We conducted research; we studied the paper and conducted numerous excavations. Finally, it is due to the renovation of building reconstruction.

The Observatory occupied 46.40 meters in diameter and 30 meters in height. The Ulugbek observatory has a sextant. It is a vertical circle instrument. Its length equates to 63 m., and the radius is 40,212 m. With this instrument, astronomers were able to observe the moon and the sun at that time.

The main part (which survives to present days) was omitted in a specially dug trench.
On one of the arcs, they presented alphabetic numbering in Arabic. It is used to accurately measure the position of celestial bodies at the time of their passage through the meridians.

The Ulugbek observatory is decorated with prints made by one artist from Holland in the 17th century.

In 1964, near the observatory, the Ulugbek museum opened. Here, visitors can see the star tables, view photos of excavations, and see models of ancient astronomical instruments.
In 2010, a monument to an astronomer with a starry background was opened in front of the museum.
