The Mausoleum of Ak-Saray

A little information was collected about the construction of the Ak-Saray mausoleum. Rumors are afloat that this mausoleum was used as the burial place for descendants of Tamerlane.

Archaeologists suppose that the Ak-Saray mausoleum was built in the 15th century according to one of Abu Said's orders.
Abu Said was the governor of Khorasan. In 1457, he moved the capital to Herat. 11 years later, he died in a battle against Turkmens. In the dungeon of the mausoleum, there is a crypt with an octagonal shape.

Archaeologists discovered the burial of a beheaded man near the eastern wall of the Ak-Saray mausoleum. It is considered that it was the son of Ulugbek Abdullatif who was executed in this way after his father’s dethronement.

The construction of the Ak-Saray is unremarkable. The mausoleum is not decorated; its dome has collapsed or was never completed.

However, the interior of the mausoleum is very nicely decorated and professional.

All the walls are decorated with ornamental paintings. These pictures were made using a special technique called "kundal." The wall painting shimmers with gold and a unique range of color tones.
