Hazrat Khyzr Mosque

In the 19th century, in the southern part of Afrosiab, was built the Hazrat Hizr mosque (Hazrat Khyzr, Hazrat-Khyzr).

Near the mosque was located the main gate to the historical Uzbek city, and close to it ran the Argiz aqueduct, which supplied cold water to inhabitants.

There is a legend that all the inhabitants of the city came to the place where the mosque was built to pray to the elderly Khyzr. This fact probably served as the impetus to build the Hazrat Khyzr Mosque.
In 1823, Hazrat Khyzr Mosque was erected. It was part of the mazar Kussama ibn Abbas complex. A tourist guide can tell you all the details about the mosque. Architecture approaches building very thoroughly. Painters have been working on the decorations of the mosque for long days and nights.

The covered shed, which leaned on the columns, was decorated with original ornaments.
In the square khanaka is the mikhrab niche, which includes two cells for students. From the east, the complex is decorated with carved wooden gates. The walls of the mosque have been specially decorated with unique polychrome carvings made of ganch.

The sky blue dome is decorated with colored openwork carving, which was performed in the ancient technique of "chaspak."

On the walls of the mosque of Hazrat Hyzr, we can observe a large number of dates. These figures tell visitors about the restoration work (when they were made).

However, the main figure (the building of the mosque) is located above the mihrab khanaka. You can order a tour with an excursion to this ancient city's tourist attraction.

The Legend of Saint Hyzr.
Hyzr was a hero in Uzbek legends. People believe in its existence and hope to meet it near the mosque someday. They believe that this meeting will bring them luck.

Saint Hyzr is very often mentioned in the epic "Shahnameh" written by Ferdowsi the poet and in legends about Alexander the Great.

People compare him with the prophet Elijah and with St. George and believe that he is the patron of all travelers.

People believe that Khyzra is a wise and very cheerful monk who brings peace of mind and success in life to everyone who meets him.
