The Karakalpakstan State Museum of Art is named after I.V. Savitsky

In 1966, the museum was founded on the initiative of an artist from Moscow, Igor Savitsky. Savitsky spent only a few days in Karakalpakstan, but it was enough to fall in love with this land.

In 1957, he moved to Karakalpakstan and began to gather a collection of works of art.
He works in a department of the Academy of Sciences in Nukus and continues collecting exhibits for the museum: utensils, costumes, household items. A few years later, the museum was opened on his initiative.

From the very beginning, Sawicky tried to fill the museum’s collection with Karakalpak folk art. He gave a lot of attention to avant-garde artists. Incidentally, he was the only one who was interested in them so openly. At that time, this trend in art was banned.
Here, in the museum of Savitsky, is one of the largest collections of paintings by the Russian avant-garde of the early 20th century.

Today, the museum's exhibition consists of more than 85.5 thousand exhibits. The Savitsky Museum’s area is small; it includes only 3% of the entire collection.

However, by the autumn, on the order of Prime Minister of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, it was decided to expand the building, so that visitors could get acquainted with at least half the works of art.

By the way, in 2010, they shot an American documentary movie called "Desert of Forbidden Art." This film is about the Savitsky Museum and its collections. Filming a movie has lasted for 7 years. The movie was based on stories and biographies of avant-garde artists, archival photographs, and various documents.

After all, the American writers and filmmakers shot a good film, in which they show the life and work of Savitsky and the tragic fate of artists. The film will be interesting for everybody who loves 20th century Russian art.
