Kurgan-Tube

Kurgan-Tube is an ancient city that is situated on the southern side of the capital of the Republic of Tajikistan.

Initially, the city was a village, and it appeared around the 7th century. Originally, it was called Khuttal, and when the settlement grew into a town, it started being called Levakend.
The place was famous for a special breed of sheep. There are the ruins of an ancient city not far from Kurgan-Tube called Lagman (10–13th centuries).

In Laghman, construction was so developed that archaeologists were able to detect artificial tubes for waterfalls and the numerous and fortified walls of a brick well. Lagman was considered a relocation site for ancient Bactria. An active trade as well as arts and crafts were developed.

Near the mound, archaeologists found an ancient Buddhist monastery that dates back to the 8th–9th centuries. To this day, walls with paintings are well preserved, kelyas, and even the sanctuary. Thanks to the excavations, in this place was discovered the world-famous statue of "Buddha in Nirvana", which is currently in the National Museum of Antiquities.

To date, Kurgan-Tube is one of the large-scale cities in the Khatlon region, where a lot of institutions, businesses, cultural centers, and schools have been built.

Outside the city, a railway and an airport with domestic flights were built.

For tourists, the History Museum is a very interesting place to visit, which displays a collection of about 700 exhibits. In the given museum, you can be acquainted with the history and development of the ancient city of Tajikistan.
