Karakol

Karakol is an ancient city in the Republic of Kyrgyzstan. It is a very interesting and attractive city for all tourists.

Karakol is located in the east of the state, in the foothills of the Teskei-Ala-Too, at a height of 1850 m above sea level.

 

The climate in this region is considered to be temperate continental.

The city was founded in 1869. The city resembles a rectangular shape. From the start, green and pleasing to the locals, the shade of trees in the hot season, it was decided to plant shrubs and trees in front of each house, and who had an opportunity to plant the entire garden. It was made with the aim of making the city green and pleasing local people in the hot season.

Initially, people in the city built houses out of clay, but when in 1887, there was a great earthquake and the city was destroyed almost to the ground, it was decided to build a home out of hardwood.

The small town was growing and developing very fast. Currently, it is home to more than 65,000 people.

Originally, the city was called Karakol, but in 1889, it was renamed in honor of the famous traveler, Przewalski, and began to be called Przewalsk.

Many legends are spread about this traveler. For example, one of them says that once upon a time, in a valley that is between the high mountains, a strong young eagle appeared.

It fearlessly attacked flocks of sheep, and there was no salvation from it. The traveler could help poor shepherds and save their flocks.

In 1922, the city was again called Karakol, and this name of the city remained until 1939. In that year, the city celebrated the centennial of the birth of the Russian traveler. In 1992, the city returned to its original name, and so it is called to this day.

By the way, the first weather station in Kyrgyzstan was established in the city in 1887.

Gradually, the town of Karakol began to open a variety of companies and institutions. The city grew and developed both economically and in the trading sphere. By 1914, the city had operated more than 60 industrial small businesses.

From city attractions, tourists can see the Orthodox Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, as well as walk through the Dungan mosque.

There is also the tomb of the famous Russian traveler, Przewalski, not far from the town.
